TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Handicapped Children) is an intervention developed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. TEACCH provides training and services geared to helping autistic children and their families cope with the condition. The program is focussed to improve the communications skills and autonomy. As the child progresses, modifications and additions are made to suit the child' progress.

The approach is based on collaboration between parents and professionals, creating structured teaching environments. Principles and concepts of TEACCH include the following:

  • Improved adaptation
  • Parent collaboration
  • Assessment for individualised treatment
  • Structured teaching
  • Skill enhancement
  • Cognitive and behaviour therapy
